Gifted and Talented Education (GATE)
Holmes Elementary follows San Diego City School's GATE Diversity Cluster, Model B, for students in grades 3-5. This model provides that at least 25% of the students in a class are GATE identified, with the remaining openings filled with students reflecting the diversity of the school.
All teachers in grades 3-5 are GATE certified (or in the process of certification) and receive specialized professional development to ensure that students' needs continue to be met.
Numerous strategies and enrichment activities are employed to challenge all of our students, including those identified as GATE. Some of these strategies and enrichment activities are the following:
|
|
- Inquiry based learning
- Pre-assessments to determine students' needs
- Cooperative group learning
- Tiered assignments
- Group projects that encourage cooperation, leadership and creativity
- Author studies
- Problem solving
- Guest speakers
- Interactive social studies curriculum
- Field trips to enrich students' experiences (Midway Science Labs, Museum of Photographic Arts, Museum of Man, Floating Laboratory, etc.)
