Dress Code

All students and staff are expected to uphold high standards of conduct and appearance. Holmes Elementary School encourages a dress code which emphasizes health, safety and comfort. General clothing standards for all children require that shoes must be worn at all times and should be worn with appropriate socks or stockings.

Guidelines for Holmes Elementary:

  1. Shoes must be worn at all times to prevent foot injuries during recess and P.E.
  2. Clothing should be suitable for normal school activities and in keeping with what is acceptable attire for children in elementary school (i.e. dresses, slacks, sweaters, blouses, shirts, jeans and mid-thigh walking shorts).
  3. Unacceptable items of apparel include:

  • Open-toed sandals, flip flops, slippers, high heel shoes and healies (children must wear closed-toe shoes on P.E. day)
  • Short shorts, very tight shorts or tight skirts of any kind
  • Strapless or see-through shirts, shirts that do not cover the stomach or tops with straps smaller than one inch wide.
  • Pants worn below the waist (hip hugger jeans)
  • Bandanas, caps with gang symbols, or other gang type clothing is not allowed at school. All such items will be confiscated by school personnel and turned into the office. The return of these items will be handled by the administration.
  • Cosmetics are not appropriate for students in elementary school. Dangling earrings or long necklaces could become a safety hazard. No excessive amounts of jewelry should be worn.
  • Clothing promoting alcohol, drugs or unacceptable messages.

Many of the above items can be hazardous when running and jumping on the blacktop and dirt playground.

The principal may approve exceptions to the dress code for unusual situations or for specific events, such as spirit days.
