Arrival and Departure

Arrival

Children must not arrive at school before 8:10a.m. as there is no adult supervision provided until that time. We request parent cooperation in seeing that students do not arrive too early. We do expect all students to arrive on time. In doing so, please make sure that you do not leave your vehicle unattended in the 3 minute zone. This is intended for drop-off only in the mornings. This keeps the traffic flow moving and helps keep children safe from crossing double parked cars or cars that may collide from trying to pass or pull around one another.

Student Drop Off

Adults delivering children to school can do so by drop-off only in the passenger zone (the 3 minute zone is for drop-off only in the morning). Please do not create a safety hazard by double parking to wait for your child or by asking your child to cross in the middle of the street. Please use the cross walk.

Kindergarten: Parents may drop off students at their classrooms. Following drop-off, parents should leave campus.
Grades 1-5:

All students are to go directly to the cafeteria area for breakfast or to the blacktop. Students are not to go to their classrooms for any reason. Supervision is provided in the cafeteria area, the blacktop area, and various high traffic points on campus. If it's raining, all students should go directly to the cafeteria and wait for their teacher.

Walking

To ensure maximum safety for all students, the San Diego Unified School District suggests students and parents abide by the following guidelines set by the National Safe Kids Campaign.

Walking to School
Pedestrian injuries are the second leading cause of unintentional injury-related deaths among children ages 5-14.

To avoid injury:

  • Never let children under age 10 cross the street alone.
  • Teach children to recognize and obey traffic signals and pavement markings.
  • Choose the safest route between home and school and practice walking it with children until they can demonstrate traffic safety awareness.

Remind kids to:

  • Cross streets only in crosswalks; never enter streets from between parked cars or from behind shrubbery.
  • Always look both ways before crossing the street.
  • Walk-don't run-across intersections.
  • A flashing "walk" signal does not mean it's safe to cross.
  • Use the same route every day and avoid shortcuts.
  • Don't speak to strangers; if a stranger approaches, tell a trusted adult such as a parent or teacher.

Bicycles

The San Diego Police Department requests that only students in grades four and above ride bicycles to school. Although the school has designated an area adjacent to room B-22 for students to park bicycles, the San Diego Unified School District is not responsible for theft, damage, or loss of use to any bicycle, equipment or article left in or around this area. All such risk is assumed by the student.

All bicycles should have locks and licenses. Students are urged to secure their bicycles in an appropriate manner by using a quality lock and chain or other devices.

Helmets are required by California law. Students not wearing helmets may lose the privilege of parking a bike on school grounds. As defined in Vehicle Code Section 21212, any person under 18 years of age must wear a properly fitted and fastened helmet when riding a bicycle, scooter, skateboard, or when wearing in-line or roller skates. Helmets must also meet the standards of either the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) or the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

Dismissal

Students are dismissed promptly at 2:55 p.m. (12:30 p.m. on Wednesdays) and should leave campus immediately upon dismissal. Students who ride the bus to and from school will leave shortly after dismissal. Students who participate in the YMCA after school program are to report to the YMCA room (M,T,TH,F) or the lunch court (W) immediately after school.

Student Pick Up

Please meet your child(ren) at a designated spot either at the front entrance or in the lunch court. You may pick up your child at their classroom once the bell has rung. Parents can wait in the lunch court area only. Signs are posted to remind you to stay out of the classroom corridors or directly in front of the classrooms. This disrupts the class and teacher from performing the final duties of the day.

Safety Rules for pick-up

  • Vehicles are not to enter the parking lot at any time between the hours of 6:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
  • Please ensure the safety of all students by not parking in the bus loading area and asking your child(ren) to cross the street only in the cross walk. The school's main concern is the health and safety of your children.

Specific dismissal procedures vary by grade level, as indicated below:

Kindergarten: Students are dismissed from the classroom area by their teacher upon seeing a responsible adult or older sibling. Older siblings must come to the Kindergarten yard to pick up younger siblings.
Grades 1-5: Parents/guardians may pick their child(ren) up at class once the bell has rung or they can wait in the lunch court for them.
YMCA Students: YMCA students are to report to the YMCA classroom or to the lunch court on Wednesdays.
Bus Students: All buses park in the loading/unloading zone in the staff parking lot or in front of the school.

If you are more than 10 minutes late to pick up a student, please go to the front office. You will be asked to provide identification. Occasionally children are not picked up on time by parents, but this keeps our office staff from performing their duties. If this becomes a chronic occurrence, we'll have no choice but to call the San Diego Police Department.
